Japan is planning to station medium-range surface-to-air missiles on Yonaguni, about 110 kilometers east of Taiwan, as part of a broader military build-up.
The sailing of four China Coast Guard vessels around the Senkaku Islands on Thursday was the first intrusion by Chinese official vessels into the Japanese waters around the islands since Jun. 14, according to the Japan Coast Guard.

Issues such as stockpiling food and being able to swiftly evacuate all residents of the islands in Okinawa remain as Japan considers various contingencies.
According to the JCG's 11th regional headquarters in Naha, two Chinese ships entered Japanese waters south of Uotsuri Island in the Senkaku chain around 3:15 p.m. They were both reported to be equipped with what appeared to be cannons.
