China¡¯s growing military actions are Japan¡¯s top security challenge and ¡°must be addressed through overall national strength and cooperation with allies and like-minded nations,¡± according to Tokyo¡¯s annual defense report released Tuesday.

The glossy , which received Cabinet approval the same day, is packed with a record 598 pages of assessments detailing the increasingly volatile regional security environment. For the first time, it also includes links to short movies offering explanations about defense policy, as the Defense Ministry looks to reach a broader audience ahead of a planned revision of the nation¡¯s three key security documents this year.?

¡°The security environment surrounding our country today is the most severe and complex since the end of the war,¡± Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi writes in a preface to the report. ¡°Even in East Asia, we cannot rule out the possibility of a serious situation occurring that could shake the foundations of the stable international order established after the war.¡±
