Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte faces a contentious trial in the Senate from Monday, a case that could end her political career or leave her as the top contender to succeed archrival Ferdinand Marcos Jr. as president.
Duterte has denied charges that she plotted to assassinate Marcos, misused public funds and amassed unexplained wealth, claiming the allegations are politically motivated. She is trying to have the case thrown out by the Supreme Court, which last year ruled against a previous impeachment effort on procedural grounds.
Over 6,000 police personnel have been deployed at the Senate complex in Manila where the trial will commence on Monday afternoon, while full alert status has been declared across the capital, according to local media reports.
