JOHANNESBURG ¨C South Africa cannot create nearly enough green jobs to make up for the many thousands it will lose as it closes polluting coal mines and power plants, experts say, adding to the country¡¯s burden of massive and rising unemployment.
Nearly 1 in 3?South Africans are unemployed, according to the latest government figures and the numbers are rising. But experts say the real level is probably some 10% ?higher. Youth unemployment is around 60%, they say.
South Africa has so far phased out just one coal-fired power plant, Komati in ?Mpumalanga province, ?as part of its Just Energy Transition Investment Plan. The closure led to the loss of thousands of ?jobs, and few new opportunities opened up.
