Police have arrested two construction workers for allegedly entering and trying to burgle a house in Tokyo's Setagaya Ward where a high-profile family murder occurred around 25 years ago.

The two men, Vietnamese nationals Luong Van Hai, 32, and Nguyen Manh Hung, 28, were arrested on suspicion of trespassing and attempted theft.

The two admitted to the allegations, saying that their incomes were unstable. They said they did not know that the house was the location of a murder.

The Metropolitan Police Department believes the pair broke into the house with the intention of stealing valuables, in the period from around mid-September 2023 to around mid-December 2025.

The department said that a police investigator noticed a broken window near the entrance to the house on Dec. 13, 2025. Footprints were also found inside the house, prompting police investigations including examination of security camera footage.

Luong admitted entering the house with Nguyen during an investigation following his arrest in March this year for allegedly overstaying his the period of his legal residence in Japan.

Late on Dec. 30, 2000, or during the early hours of the following day, corporate worker Mikio Miyazawa, his wife, daughter and son were murdered at the house. The case remains unresolved.
