Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi and his British counterpart, Yvette Cooper, on Monday reaffirmed the need to cooperate?on efforts to help stabilize the situation in the Middle East.
During their strategic dialogue meeting in Tokyo, Motegi and Cooper called for the Strait of Hormuz to be open to free navigation.
Cooper also expressed hope that Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi will visit Britain in the coming months.
At the beginning of the talks, Motegi stressed that the importance of cooperation with Britain is growing at a time when the international order is being shaken. Cooper said that the two countries need to work together more closely than ever on the Middle East situation.
The two ministers agreed that the security of the Euro-Atlantic region and that of the Indo-Pacific region are inseparable and confirmed their intention to enhance bilateral security cooperation.
They also agreed to accelerate the joint development of a next-generation fighter jet, a project also involving Italy.
Additionally, the ministers signed a memorandum on the protection of Japanese and British nationals abroad. The two countries will share related information during peacetime and cooperate in evacuation efforts during emergencies.
