In Miyagi Prefecture, the trend has become visible in everyday classrooms. On average, one or two children per class in elementary schools do not attend regularly. In junior high schools, the number rises to two or three.

Why are so many students finding it difficult to go to school? Children and their parents interviewed by Kahoku Shimpo spoke about their struggles on condition that their real names not be used.
