The most contested plot of land in India has unleashed deadly riots and set Hindu against Muslim. Now the nation¡¯s top court will decide who owns it.

In dispute is a scrap of land in Ayodhya, a sleepy northern temple town that is a holy site for the nation¡¯s two biggest religions ¡ªand is emblematic of an increasingly contentious fight over land claimed by temples and other religious entities.

Who wins final rights over the 2.77-acre (1.12-hectare) plot will become clear when the Supreme Court issues its verdict, due by Nov. 17.
