Stage adaptations of anime and manga (referred to as 2.5D theater for the mediums¡¯ position between two-dimensional and three-dimensional worlds) are not only a way for fans to engage further with the stories ¡ª they also play an important part in the modern theater landscape.
Rather than a term for any stage adaptation of anime or manga, 2.5D theater shows are serialized stories told across multiple productions that tell a long-running narrative. These are brought to life with re-creations of characters and worlds fans expect to find intensely familiar ¡ª often exactly as originally written.
¡°Gachiakuta,¡± a Go Ueki-directed production that premiered on May 22 in Tokyo, is a new breed of 2.5D show incorporating a variety of performance styles that go beyond classic musical theater tropes.
