China has surged past Japan to become the biggest car supplier to Australia, with imports from companies such as BYD accelerating to a record high, powered by demand for electric vehicles.
Almost 36,000 passenger cars from China landed in Australia in April, according to government data released Thursday, well ahead of the 29,000 from Japan. That took the number of Chinese cars arriving in Australia in the first four months of the year to above 100,000, a 51% increase from the same period last year.
More than 40,000 of the passenger vehicles were EVs, with imports soaring in March and April as consumers responded to an Iran war-driven jump in gasoline prices by opting for more fuel efficient cars.
