Known for its Hollywood-adjacent location and movie-industry clientele, Pink¡¯s Hot Dogs has announced it will open its first store in Japan.

The Los Angeles-headquartered family-owned operation will establish a Tokyo flagship store this year, offering 15 different hot dog options along with hamburgers, drinks and desserts.

Hot dogs are popular and readily available in Japan, sold in supermarkets and convenience stores as well as at stalls and restaurants, but a Pink¡¯s menu is likely to offer a novel twist.

In addition to its image as a Hollywood favorite, the 86-year-old company plans to differentiate itself through its wide range of toppings and specials, and responsiveness to the local market, offered through a franchise arrangement.

¡°We are planning limited menus and products of size to suit the preferences of Japanese customers,¡± Pink¡¯s Japan franchise operator Sunpark said in a news release.

Japan will be the company¡¯s third Asia location. In 2016, it opened a store in the Philippines, and last year entered the South Korean market.

Pink¡¯s Hot Dogs was founded by Paul and Betty Pink in 1939, initially as a stall, and its first permanent store opened in 1946. Located near Paramount studios, Disney and Universal, the Pink¡¯s starlet customers in turn attracted tourists.

Kim Kardashian is reportedly a fan, as was the late comedic actor Betty White ¡ª who joked that hot dogs, along with vodka, were the secret to her longevity. The star died at age 99.

In recent years, as more Japanese brands launch in the U.S., American food brands ¡ª often with long histories in their home markets ¡ª have looked to Japan for growth.

Randy¡¯s Donuts established its first Japan outpost last year, and has expanded to seven locations, while fast-food chain Fatburger reentered the Japan market late last year.

Pink¡¯s Hot Dogs is aiming for 20 stores in central locations in the country by the end of 2030.
