The United Arab Emirates has called for a ¡°sustained approach¡± to address Iran¡¯s full range of threats, including its nuclear capabilities and ballistic missiles, as a truce with the Islamic Republic appears precarious.

The oil-rich Gulf country is ¡°closely following¡± U.S. President Donald Trump¡¯s announcement on Tuesday of a two-week ceasefire, and ¡°seeking further clarification on the agreement¡¯s provisions to ensure Iran¡¯s full commitment to an immediate cessation of all hostilities in the region and the complete and unconditional reopening of the Strait of Hormuz,¡± the UAE¡¯s Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Iranian attacks on infrastructure, energy facilities and civilian sites over the past 40 days across the Persian Gulf require a ¡°firm position,¡± the ministry added, citing Iran¡¯s remaining military clout as well as its affiliated proxies in the region as issues that must be confronted.

The UAE also said freedom of navigation must be ensured by ending ¡°economic warfare and piracy in the Strait of Hormuz.¡± It had earlier expressed ¡°deep disappointment¡± over the United Nations Security Council¡¯s ¡°failure¡± to adopt a resolution to protect shipping through the waterway. In the statement, the ministry pointed out that the UAE was ¡°not a party to this war and had undertaken intensive diplomatic efforts to prevent its outbreak.¡±

Iran¡¯s closing of the strait, which blocks about a fifth of the world¡¯s oil and liquefied natural gas, began soon after the Israeli and American military campaign against the Tehran regime commenced on Feb. 28. Iranian attacks have also hit various sites in Gulf nations, including U.S. bases and diplomatic missions.

Trump¡¯s announcement of a ceasefire Tuesday night eased fears of a protracted global energy crisis that intensified after he had vowed to unleash massive devastation on Iran, a step that was widely expected to be met by fiercer Iranian strikes on its Gulf neighbors.

Talks intended to forge a lasting peace accord are slated to follow the ceasefire. However, Iran carried out more assaults on Gulf countries after the truce announcement. The UAE said that included 17 missiles and 35 drones aimed at its territory on Wednesday.

It also said operations at its key Habshan gas complex have been temporarily suspended after falling debris from an interception touched off multiple fires.

Further casting doubt on the talks, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf said a ¡°workable basis on which to negotiate¡± has been openly violated. He cited Israeli strikes on Lebanon, even before the start of negotiations.

The passage of oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz was halted as a consequence of the attacks on Lebanon,?Iran¡¯s semi-official Fars news agency reported Wednesday.
