Japan's plans to develop a next-generation fighter jet alongside Britain and Italy have taken a significant step forward, as the Global Combat Air Program (GCAP) awarded its first joint international contract following months of uncertainty.
The GCAP Agency, which manages the program on behalf of the three partner nations, on Thursday placed a ?686 million ($857 million) contract with Edgewing, the trilateral joint venture set to lead the design and development of the supersonic aircraft.
Company officials said the funding is meant to support critical design and engineering work activities and enable the trilateral partnership to ¡°build momentum and accelerate pace of delivery.¡±
