India is moving quickly to shore up relations with Bangladesh following last week¡¯s landmark election that swept into power a former ruling party known for prioritizing closer links with China.
Tarique Rahman was sworn in as Bangladesh¡¯s next prime minister before a crowd of visiting foreign leaders and other dignitaries on Tuesday after a landslide win last week that delivered a two-thirds parliamentary majority to his Bangladesh Nationalist Party.
The result catapults one of Bangladesh¡¯s two major historic ruling parties back into power. The party has advocated for closer ties with China and says it will pursue a more ¡°balanced¡± relationship with India now that it has returned to office.
