Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung confirmed the ¡°strategic importance¡± of their countries¡¯ ties during a meeting in Nara on Tuesday, with the two agreeing to boost cooperation on economic security and reaching a deal on DNA testing for Korean wartime laborers who died in Japan.
The meeting was the two leaders¡¯ first attempt at ¡°shuttle diplomacy,¡± or routine mutual visits to each other¡¯s country, under Takaichi¡¯s government. It came just a week after Lee visited China for talks with leader Xi Jinping amid an ongoing row between Beijing and Tokyo that has pushed ties down to fresh lows.
¡°Beginning with this visit, I hope to further elevate Japan-South Korea relations to new heights,¡° Takaichi said at a joint press announcement.
