When ¡°Ultraman¡± premiered on TBS on July 17, 1966, it became a cultural phenomenon that captivated audiences across Japan, launching one of the country¡¯s most enduring entertainment franchises.
The tokusatsu (special effects) series centered on a silver, 40-meter-tall alien from Nebula M78 who merges with Shin Hayata, a member of the Science Special Search Party, to become Earth¡¯s unlikely defender against a parade of spectacular monsters.
At its peak, the show drew nearly half of Japan¡¯s TV-owning households. As its popularity spread, character-branded goods, model kits and plastic figures flooded toy shops nationwide, helping fuel one of Japan¡¯s first great merchandising booms and establishing a commercial template that tokusatsu franchises would follow for decades. The series was also exported across Asia and to the United States, where it introduced a generation of viewers to Japanese entertainment.
