Mieko Kawakami¡¯s graceful yet uncompromising prose that captures the kaleidoscopic realities of modern Japanese womanhood has made her a literary figure of international renown.

Adaptation has punctuated Kawakami¡¯s rise to prominence. Her breakthrough novel ¡°Breasts and Eggs,¡± translated into English by Sam Bett and David Boyd, was brought to the stage at the Thalia Theater in Hamburg, Germany, in 2022. The following year, her short story ¡°Ice Cream Fever¡± was made into a feature film by director Tetsuya Chihara.

Kawakami¡¯s work comes to life anew in Yukiko Sode¡¯s feature ¡°All the Lovers in the Night,¡± adapted from the 2011 novel of the same name (published in English in 2022, also translated by Bett and Boyd).
