NHK¡¯s annual New Year¡¯s Eve music contest, ¡°Kohaku Uta Gassen,¡± has been accused of being out of touch in recent years. The latest edition pushed back hard against that critique.

The 76th ¡°Kohaku¡± ¡ª a musical bonanza that divides female and male performers into competing red and white teams, respectively ¡ª aired Dec. 31 and ended with the White team claiming victory. More memorable than the result, however, was a nearly five-hour sprint of spectacle, surprise appearances and location-hopping performances that rarely let up. From enka tributes and idol collaborations to K-pop stars and anime tie-ins, the broadcast felt newly energized ¡ª and, at times, essential again.

That sense of renewal came from NHK folding recent experiments into a single, maximalist show, one that embraced viral moments, genre crossovers and off-site performances while still honoring the traditions that have kept ¡°Kohaku¡± a year-end fixture for decades.
