Ai Furihata realized something special was happening for her group AiScReam when she started hearing herself all over the internet.

¡°I watch a lot of videos of K-pop idols, influencers and creators, so when I noticed people using our song in their shorts around March, I thought it was starting to spread bit by bit,¡± says the 31-year-old voice actor and singer, seated between fellow AiScReam members Aguri Onishi, 28, and Wakana Okuma, 24.

The trio is speaking with The Japan Times from backstage at the recent YouTube FanFest Japan held at Chiba¡¯s Makuhari Messe, where it feels like the video platform has spilled into real life ¡ª the crowd is a mix of influencers, creators and fans. It¡¯s an appropriate place to see AiScReam ¡ª a unit formed from three members of the long-running mixed-media franchise ¡°Love Live!¡± ¡ª amid all this: The group served what might be the most viral J-pop track of the year.
