Jordan Rochester, who made his name as one of Britain¡¯s most recognized financial commentators during the country¡¯s split from the European Union, has left Mizuho Bank to pursue a position in Dubai.
Known in financial markets as ¡°Mr. Brexit,¡± Rochester is leaving Mizuho after nearly two years as its head of fixed income strategy, based in London, the Japanese bank said on Wednesday.
¡°We can confirm that Jordan has decided to leave the firm to pursue a new opportunity,¡± Mizuho said in a statement, while thanking him for his contribution. The statement added that Rochester will relocate overseas for his next role but did not disclose further details.
However, one person with knowledge of the matter said Rochester will be based in Dubai.
Rochester declined to comment.
Rochester joined Mizuho in 2024 as part of the bank¡¯s push to expand its currency and rates business in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Prior to that, he was a currency strategist at Nomura International in London, building a reputation for his commentary on the twists and turns of the U.K.¡¯s decision to leave the European Union.
In the three years after the 2016 Brexit vote, he published more than 300 research notes on the topic, analyzing the impact of U.K. politics on markets. He also correctly foresaw how the pound would fall as a result of Brexit.
As head of Mizuho¡¯s fixed income, currencies?and commodities team, Rochester gained recognition this year from his early recommendation to short U.K. interest rate futures as the U.S.-Iran war erupted. He also advised clients to sell the euro and buy inflation protection to position for the impact of higher oil prices.
His potential move to Dubai underscores how the emirate continues to attract financial professionals from around the world. Heightened geopolitical tensions in the region have not yet derailed its success as a financial hub?that is increasingly home to hedge funds, financial technology?and innovation firms, as well as family business-related entities.
