Hong Kong¡¯s restaurants are reshaping their supply chains after the government banned seafood from parts of Japan, bringing the financial hub¡¯s curbs more in line with Beijing despite scientific reassurances the products are safe to eat.
Beijing said Thursday it would ¡°comprehensively¡± suspend seafood imports from Japan in response to the start of the release of treated wastewater into the ocean from the wrecked Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant the same day.
China already bans seafood imports from 10 Japanese prefectures. The Hong Kong government this week announced a ban on seafood imports from those same prefectures, four of which are landlocked. Violations of the ban are punishable by up to a year in jail.
