Iranians living in Japan have been put through the emotional wringer ¡ª worried sick about their loved ones back home while feeling a mix of fear, relief and hope ¡ª after the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran on Saturday and killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

It was a shocking development for the Iranian diaspora around the world, including in Japan. Now, the future of their home country remains up in the air as they try to contact their family and friends back home.

It was 5 a.m. in Tokyo when Somayyeh Mehri, a 38-year-old international preschool teacher, woke up to the news that Khamenei had been killed.
