Tsunan Brewing Co. Ltd's Terroir Sake "GO DINER" Clinches Bronze at IWC 2023 Sake Category
Tsunan Brewing Co. Ltd, located in Tsunan Town, Nakauonuma District, Niigata Prefecture, is proud to announce that its terroir sake “GO DINER” has been awarded the Bronze Medal in the Sake category at the prestigious International Wine Challenge (IWC) 2023, the world’s largest wine competition.
[Understanding IWC]
The IWC, conducted annually in London, is considered one of the most influential wine contests globally. Since 2007, it has featured a Sake category, where entries undergo a rigorous blind tasting process. Judges determine the medals – Gold, Silver, or Bronze – after comprehensive group tastings, followed by a final verification by the head judge. Out of the Gold medal winners, a Trophy sake is selected as the most exceptional.
This year, the competition saw 1,601 sake entries, judged by a panel of 63 experts from 14 countries.

[The Terroir of Tsunan]
Tsunan Town, characterized by one of Japan’s largest river terrace formations dating back to the glacial era over 400,000 years ago, has a long history of human settlement since the Jomon period. The town’s distinct topography contributes to its abundant water and fertile land.
[Snow-Covered Brewing]
Tsunan Brewing¡¯s process is unique to the snow season. The brewery, nestled amidst beech and cedar forests, benefits from the snow’s natural air-purifying effect. This creates an ideal low-temperature, high-humidity environment for controlling microorganisms, crucial for brewing excellent sake.
[Local Tsunan Rice: “Gohyakumangoku”]
Tsunan Brewing is unique in its use of locally grown “Gohyakumangoku” rice, a variety suited for sake brewing and representative of Niigata. Tsunan¡¯s rice fields, situated around 300 meters above sea level, yield larger grains with substantial shinpaku (starchy core), thanks to significant temperature fluctuations between day and night. The brewery collaborates closely with local producers to preserve the regional flavor.
[Water: The Essence of Tsunan Sake]
The brewing water is sourced from snowmelt and the area’s unique topography, characterized by soft, fine particles, contributing to a smooth taste. This water is integral to Tsunan Brewing¡¯s process, shaping the character of its sake.
[The Artisanal Touch]
Tsunan Brewing adopts a traditional three-stage brewing process, slowly maturing its sake like its signature Junmai Daiginjo. The brewery has garnered numerous awards, including national and international accolades, for its delicate, rich, and clean-tasting sake, which pairs exceptionally well with food.
[Sustainable Brewing: Tsunan Brewing’s Role]
As a sustainably-focused brewery, Tsunan Brewing was established through a collaborative effort of local rice producers, JA (Agricultural Cooperatives), and the Tsunan Town administration. The brewery adopts a “Brew For Future” strategy, focusing on a circular economy, local optimization, and embracing diverse values.
